From Feet to Fathom Lab Report

I think it is important to have an international measuring system because every country has there own and having a measuring system everyone would know is very helpful because other people and or foreigners can work in other countries  besides there own. The materials we used were: Partner,Objects in the classroom (whiteboard, desk, hallway, SPACE book, Peep, Crayon box),Meter stick or measuring tape, Calculator.
List of ways to measure:
Pace: legs outstretched =1 yard approximately or 1 meter
Egyptian cubit= elbow to tip of the middle finger= 18 inches or 45 cm
Fathom = middle finger to middle finger across the body = 6 feet, 180 cm, 1.8m
Palm = across the palm of the hand = 3 inches or 8 cm
Hand including thumb = 4 inches or 10 cm
Span = from tip of thumb to tip of little finger= 3 palms or 9 inches or 24 cm
English yard = from fingertip of arm to nose = 36 inches or about 1 meter
Foot = 12 “or 30 cm approximately
Fingernail = tip of pinky =1/2 inch = 1 cm.




My partners and I have not seen any patterns besides the pattern of similar numbers for each measurement of the object. On the image above you can see all the numbers for each object. In conclusion the English method was very useful because you dont need to go out to find anything to measure with because you have it right on you. I also think that the way to measure with the nail was the best for me because I am used to centimeters and 1 nail is simply 1 centimeter. And I also think  that measuring with the nail was the was the easiest way to measure objects with because of the same reason it is accurate simply 1 cm. I think my partners and I did a great job with time because it only took us 2 periods to finish this lab I don't think we could of changed anything but to do even better on with time and finish the blog post quicker.

Forces and Motion

Yesterday we started anew unit called forces and motion. We watched quite a few videos on youtube as a class such as time warp and tawny hawks extreme skateboarding jumps. I am very excited about this unit and can't wait to learn more because I don't know much about this unit. But the few things I know about forces and motion are that we use force everyday in our lives even in our sleep, you use force to push a pencil, move a glass, or just simply walk or jump. I guess I know a little about forces but I don't really know how to explain motion all I know is that motion is when you move or walk and things like that but I am not sure if that is right. I want to learn well I don't know were to start. I guess I want to learn as much as I can in this unit. The way I am going to learn it is by researching, reading, taking notes in class more, and connecting. May my learning begin...HaHaHa...

Who ownes the oceans minerals...

  Today and last Friday we had to get in to groups of four and debate about who owns the minerals from the oceans and who should get them. We had very strong opinions about who the ocean's minerals belong too for example Luka said the minerals should go to the people who can afford it and that life is business! On the other hand I said that they should get a grip and realize that the minerals are everyone and just because the other country doesn't have the money to buy the minerals it doesn't mean they have nothing to offer. Another choice is just to trade, the rich country does not always have all the minerals  that the less fortunate country ha and that is were the trading come in. We also had very strong opinions on what happens as a cause of underwater and surface mining. We said that underwater mining lets out pollution which kills a type of fish that is eaten by another that is eaten by another fish and so on and on and that destructs the food chain which leads to death and or end of man kind. And surface mining when they commit the process of deforestation for mining they should plant all the trees and plants back to be able to come back there again to more minerals. For example when a little boy plays with neatly organized toys he off course makes a mess to be able to play properly with it again he has to put everything back in to place. I think our group did really well and we were barely off track. I extremely liked this activity and would love to do it again.

Crystal Garden Reflection...

 I think the crystals grew best on cotton balls and little mini pools. Unlike the cotton balls and mini pools the crystals grew worst on cardboard and wood. The borax was the easiest to grow crystals from. I think the ebsom salt crystals were the hardest to grow from and took the longest. The best method of growing crystals was spilling the liquid in the pool and there on it grew around and stuff. I have seen how stefans simple garden thanks to is pools of crystals became one of the best. I have learned that crystals take time to grow and need a lo of care to be successful. I have no new hypothesis. My error was probably that i did not make my sand pool a crystal pool. I would of done more things on cotton balls and made a bunch of pools. I have just a few more questions like, Do crystals die? How long does it take for crystals to grow to about 50 centimeters? Were do usually crystals grow?

Skills Lab....

 Not a while ago we did a lab... a skills lab! It was to help us with the unit that we are finishing off with. We were learning about the structure of the earth. This lab was supposed to help us with our studies about the mantel. To be exact the lab was called Modeling Mantle Convection Currents. We had to fill a bucket kind of thing with really cold water, then we had to fill in a small container with boiling hot water and put in food coloring and cover it with tin foil. We put the small container  inside and poked a hole in side the tinfoil. But before we made the tiny hole with a pencil we put tiny circle shaped pieces of paper from the hole puncher and sprinkeled them on to the surface of the water. So then when we poked the hole the fod coloring started spreading around and moving the pieces of paper and started to create continents and only 1 fell so it was like Atlantis. This lab was very educational and helpful, although not many people could complete the lab correctly from the 1st time
but everyone could do it the 2nd time. Next time we should try to read the directions more properly and most importantly follow them.

Crystal Garden...

Day 1
Today we finished off putting the crystal solution on to our gardens and we are gonna wait until tomorrow to see the process and how everything goes.
Day 2
The second day of since the crystals are growing. I checked on my garden and realized that the solution on my trees is already turning into crystals i touched the trees and they even feel like them let's see what happens tomorrow!
Day 3
My crystals are growing awesomely i am noticing a lot of improvement the manoamonium solution are turning in to needle looking crystals all over the ground took and. My bushes are going great they hardened and are starting to take a temporary shape. I think.
Day 5
My crystals made very little improvement but the ground is doing well, although it doesn't look like what imagined but it is good enough because some didn't even grow as well. And i think this what i have might be it.

Dynamic Eart...

?@~  In science class we were asked to go to a special website called "The Dynamic Earth" and here is a link http://www.mnh.si.edu/earth/main_frames.html. We were also asked to make a blog poste after we were done visiting the website.And i learned that the earth is actually made of 4 layers. The crust were we live on, the mantel, the outer core and the inner core. The core is HOT, hotter than the surface of the sun! The mantle is actually rocky and the core is iron. If you look at earth as an apple the crust is as thin as the skin of the apple. The inner core is under such pressure that it is solid metal unlike the outer core is fluid liquid that is extremely hot. 
   Diamonds grow at the level of 150km underground.By comparing different types of carbon atoms in diamonds, scientist can track the carbon's source. Most of the diamonds originate in the mantel. Now, you may wonder " How do diamonds get to the surface of the earth well, they actually hitch a ride in rare magmas called kimberlite and lamproite, which from by partial melting of the upper mantel. They drive their diamond passengers up so fast that in 4-15 hours they are up on the crust. You can find diamonds beneath cartons the oldest parts of continents. Why there? Well, it is way too hot for them to form inmost of mother earths upper mantel, but the upper mantel below the cartons is quite cold that is why diamonds are stable there.

This Week We Learned...

 This week we learned about the earth's crust and caves from the 2 Bill Nye videos we watched in class. The earth's crust is actually very thin comparing to the other layers Everything we see or even is too small to see is on the earth's crust. Scientists predict that the core is made of iron and is roughly 1500°c.Then comes the outer core and the mantel. The mantel is 1200°c. No one has ever drilled to the center of the earth so no results that are found are really accurate. 
 Then we learned about the caves they have a lot of  stalagmites which very slowly drip drop on to the ground and slowly become stalactites. Both are full of minerals.  Many different animals and insects live in caves there are 3 types: Tragloxenes- cave visitors, Troglyphines- Cave lovers, Troglodytes- cove dwellers. 
 I would really like to learn all of those things, because it would be interesting to learn how rocks get their look, how people find rocks, how they mine is it dangerous, What happens to caves after they are done mining, are there people living in side the earth, what to do when a volcano erupts, how far did humans go underground?

Lab Reflections...

We did 2 labs one was cooling race lab and the other one was called making water wetter. Each is very much related to water. The making water wetter lab took quite a long time because there were 5 steps. We all had partners it was a bit of a messy project, but it was fun and cool. The cooling races lab was fun we had a different partners and we had a lot of laughs. We had to put crushed ice into 1st cup and the ice cubes into the 2nd one. Then we put thermometers into each of the cups. After, we had to start timing how much was the temperature after 3,6,9,12,15 minutes. I think in the first lab (making water wetter) we should of dripped more accurately, we should of managed our time better. And I should of done a better job putting down data.

Matter Magic Trick...

Today we had to perform our magic trick to little cute kinder gardeners. I loved it all though my magic trick didn't completely work because it takes to much time. My magic trick was called invisible ink, I had to draw with the cotton swab with the lemon juice. Why lemon juice? Well lemon juice contains carbon and when it is dry and later exposed to heat it turns into its natural color, brown. A few other liquids can do the same thing except the lemon juice and onion juice are the ones that work best, milk could also work you just have to put them in their dry forms under,beside, or above the heat source and wait until the "secret" message appears. This magic trick helped me understand more about different sustenance in food, and or drinks.

Corals extincting .....

Just by watching waves roll on to the beach doesn’t help to see how the water changes much. But from the experiments made are showing that our waters are becoming acidic. And this process is called “acidification”. And it may mean bad news for animals like the Elkhorn coral, which is found throughout the Caribbean Sea. Elkhorn coral used to be easy to find in shallow water, but now it’s an endangered species. In the last 30 years, many populations of Elkhorn coral have collapsed, thanks to disease outbreaks, hurricanes and elevated temperatures. Scientists are working on saving these corals but they are not even close to being done. In more acidic waters, Elkhorn coral are less successful at reproducing sexually. Acidification happens because oceans absorb a gas called carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide makes the water more acidic. Carbon dioxide, or CO2, in the atmosphere comes from many sources, and human activities have added a significant amount. When we burn oil or gas to generate power (such as electricity or to fuel cars), we add CO2 to the air” say the scientists. I think this is another thing that we should really deeply badly think about.

Momo which is "peach" in Japanese is one of the newest and first ever in the world police dogs and she past her exams with almost everything correct. She was able to sniff out in 5 minutes with just a sniff of a hat a crime place. She is 7 years old and 6 pounds in weight. "There are situations when small dogs are useful," says Momo's owner, Keiko Matsuyoshi. Police agree. They think Momo's size will work to her advantage. They are hoping she is going to be capable of squishing through holes and finding injured or dead or alive people after natural disasters like volcanoes or earthquakes. "Any breed of dog can be entered to become a police dog in the search-and-rescue division," says one Nara police officer. But even police were surprised to have a Chihuahua join the force. "It's quite unusual," the officer added. For now Momo is resting at home eating chicken stew and waiting until 2011 to start the job. I love dogs and they are a part of nature and nature is science so ……

"The Tampa Tribune newspaper, in Tampa, Florida, bought more than a dozen bags from Florida supermarkets. They paid a lab to test the bags for lead. The results showed that certain bags sold at Publix and Winn-Dixie supermarkets had lead levels that were a concern to health officials." said the Tampa Tribune.
Lead can't wear off on food but when the bags wear out or the color comes off the lead can freely come out and cause problems.
But the two stores took care of it and now they saved up more than 1 billion plastic and paper bags.

Science Fun...

"Sucking An Egg In A Bottle- Science Experiment

What You Need:

1 hard-boiled egg, peeled
1 long-necked bottle
3 matches
Demonstrates Science Category: Physics (Thermodynamics)
What To Do:

1) Hard boil an egg and allow to cool. After the egg cools, peel off the shell.
2) Place a long-necked bottle on your kitchen table (or any table free from flammable debris)
3) Have an adult light 3 matches and place in the bottle (all matches at once, not one at a time)
4) Quickly put the egg on top of the bottle opening


3 minutes

Demonstrates scientific principles:

The matches heats the air, which causes it to expand. When the matches extinguish, it causes the air to contract as it cools. A lower pressure is created within the bottle, than on the outside. The pressure outside the bottle causes the egg to get sucked into the bottle.

Heat causes most solids and liquids to expand, and cooling causes them to contract. Atoms or molecules within the solids vibrate more quickly with the increased heat. This causes the solid/liquid to become larges, and when cooled, become smaller.

Make a Battery From a Piece of Fruit

Category: Chemistry
Materials Needed:

* One Lemon, Lime, Orange or Grapefruit
* One Two Inch Copper Nail
* One Two Inch Galvanized Nail
* One Two Inch Christmas Tree Light Bulb
* Electrical Tape
Have your kids start this project by rolling the fruit around on the table to soften it up. This gets the juice flowing inside the fruit without breaking the skin of the fruit. Once the fruit seems softened insert each of your nails in the fruit exactly two inches apart. Do not push your nails all the way through your fruit.

After you have placed your nails in your piece of fruit you will need to prepare the light bulb. Do this by removing about one inch of the lights insulation from the bulbs leads. Take one of the leads and attach it to the galvanized nail and another lead and attach it to the copper nail. Once you attach the second lead the bulb will light up. You can secure the leads to the nails with the electrical tape.

After your fruit battery has lit the bulb explain how this is possible to the children. Tell them that the acid in citrus fruits conducts electricity. You can use a multimeter if you have one to measure the current that the fruit battery is producing. You can also vary this experiment by trying different fruits and seeing which fruits produce more current.

Music And Plants
Experiment: What effect does music have on plant growth?
Category: Plant Science
Ages: Elementary, Middle School

One simple science project is to see what sort of effect music has on plant growth. To do this, all you need is three of the same type of plant. Try to find three that are fairly identical in shape and size, two CD players, a Rock and Roll CD, a Classical music CD and some masking tape and a marker. Once you have your three plants, put a piece of masking tape on each one and label them; Classical, Rock & Roll, and Quiet.

Then place them in three separate rooms. In the first room, set up one of the CD players and put the rock and roll CD in the player, turn it on and place the plant next to it. In the second room do the same, set up a CD player, put the classical music CD in, turn it on and place the second plant next to it. Place the third plant in a quiet room by itself.

Water each plant daily, just be sure not to drown them, and after one week record the results; how each plant is doing. Wait another week (watering the plants daily) and record how well the plants are doing again

A Fun Zone

Materials Needed:
Epsom Salt
Water
Pie Pan
Measuring Cups
Mixing Bowl
Sponges
Food Coloring


To begin this project you will need to boil water. This should be done by an adult or under adult supervision. While the water is boiling have the kids cut their sponges in small pieces or shapes of their choosing. Have each child place their sponge pieces in their own pie dish with a small separation between each piece of sponge.

Once the water is boiled have each child mix one fourth cup of Epsom salt with one half cup of water. Do this part in a separate mixing bowl. When the Epsom salt and water are mixed the children can all add their choice of food coloring to their mixture. Make sure they only add a drop so they don't throw off the balance between the water and the Epsom salt.

After they have colored their mixture each child can pour the mixture evenly over each of their sponge pieces. Once they have done that they should carefully place their pie dish on the windowsill or in another sunny location. The crystals will form as the water dissolves from the mixture. This will take several days. Have the children chart the progress of the crystal formation.

The great thing about simple science projects such as this one is that you can change them up and make the outcomes different. This can be done by using different shapes of sponge . You can also take the sponge out of the equation and just fill the bottom of the pan with water. Another fun spin on this would be to do an experiment with and without the sponge at the same time."

Mysterios Lab Reflection

I had a lot of fun with Tati doing the lab with the corn starch. We did a big mistake by adding too much water and didn't get enough time playing around with the extreme goines. But, although we did mess up at the start we did get a chance to play around. It was amazing to see how just a simple mix of corn starch and water turn into a little slimy "monster".Oh and i also learned that 1 class can clean up a classroom in 10 minutes after a very messy experiment.

Under The Sea

Everyone says there are a lot of fish in the sea, but until now even scientists knew how many were there. So ten years ago, a group of scientists decided to try to find out. They said that they’d conduct the first-ever worldwide survey on the underwater marine life. Over 2,700 scientists from over 80 countries worked together for 10 years to count, track and study new underwater species . This month in a report they shared about what they learned. On their long journey they discovered many different species; they have given 1,200 new names to science. A furry white crab takes one of the names; it spends its life at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Near Africa in the Indian Ocean a 9 pound lobster takes the second one. Investigating for 10 years scientists found 250,000 marine species. In 10, 20, 30 years there might be even more or maybe less. The scientists say that we have to protect the oceans because the play a great role in our long or perhaps short lives.

Cockroaches could be good medicine !?

There was a disgusting new idea reported from the scientists recently: They said that the brains of cockroaches cold help infectious diseases.
Some of you might be thinking " How come? ",well,it states that even tough cockroaches have small brains the chemical compounds in them can kill MRSA and E. coli two of the most harmful bacteria!
E. coli is planted in the human body, if you drink or eat something with coli you can get violently sick! SO,watch out!
MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus aureus
is a bacteria that can not be treated with medicine, and doctors have troubles healing it, but cockroach brains will heal the deal!
Simon Lee and Naveed Kahn are two microbiologists who worked on this study,they both work on this study at the Nottingham University in the United Kingdom, biologists are scientists that study living things and microbiologists study microscopic living things such as bacteria.
The scientists got interested in bugs since some soldiers came back from the middle east with strange infections. But what surprised them was that the cockroaches that live in that enviroment aren't infected at all! So now they are trying to find out ways they keep themselfes safe. But for now, cockroaches are annoying scary bugs with no help to us.

Spray on fashon


 Just imagine, you are a designer of your own and all u need is a spray can! An Italian young designer with help of a university professor created a special aerosol spray that contains polymer and small pieces of fabric that are mixed with solvent which helps close turn in to liquid, it is called a physical change because even though it turns from solid to liquid it still stays close. This spray on fashion could be any fabric and any color you can also put different colored spray to make a design! It can even be washed and tucked in nicely in your closet. You can wear this stuff in any weather because as i said it can be any fabric. Although it sounds ready it's not 'cause the spray still has a very strong smell that isn't pleasant and still is hard to take off from real close like jeans but the these 'magic makers' say that it's not long until they finish the project completely in no time! Now I think that spray on fashion is cool but isn't it easy just to pull on a shirt!? Well then, I guess we'll just have to find out!
